Silas Ratliff Gulley was the youngest of eleven children born to James Priant Gulley 1810 – 1891 and Nancy Osburn 1813 – 1878. His known siblings were: Samuel Osborn Gulley 1838 – 1916; Elizabeth Walker Gulley 1839 – 1920; Lewis Francisco Gulley 1841 – 1935; James S Gulley 1842 – 1865; Abraham J Gulley 1844 – 1863; Winnie Gulley 1846 – 1862; Bryant G Gulley 1850 – 1929; Alvis Albert Gulley 1850 – 1905; Mary Polly Gulley 1851 – 1880; Clara J RUSIA Gulley 1853. He and all of his siblings were born in Scott Co. Virginia, probably Gste City which is the county seat.

The 1870 census revealed some priceless surprise information. Silas was 14 old enough to be helpful on the farm. They were living in rural Johnston, Scott, Virginia, the post office for the area was Estillville. His father declared that her was a farmer and his estate was valued at $1,200.00,and he had $100.00 in personal property. Silas elderly grand parents, Samuel Osburn and Winnie Ratliff Osburn were living with them.

Later in 1870 Silas grandmother, Winnie Ratliff Osburn, died. In 1872, Silas brother, Bryant, then a single man, decided to move west, and he settled down in Tulare Co.,California. On Mar 21 1878, Silas mother, Nancy Osburn Gulley expired. One year later, on 25 Aug 1879, Silas grandfather passed away. The family that died are all buried in the near vicinity.

The 1900 census it was learned that some time during 1878, Silas chose to make Mary Lucinda Vickers of Nickelville, Scott Co. VA his bride. Some of there children claim to be born in Nickelville, while others refer to being born in Gate City. By the year 1900 Silas and his wife,Mary Lucinda Gulley 40 and children Cordelia Gulley 20, Alvin Gulley 19,
Azzelee Gulley 17, Sarah 'Jeanette' Gulley 16, Lydia Gulley 14, Molly Gulley 12, and Frederich Gulley were installed on a farm near Tipton, Tulare, Co.,California.

In 1910 found the family livig on county road between Tulare and Waukena. They were living in rented house and employed as a farmer. Azallia had married a man named Nickelson and was living at home, but Mr, Nickelson was not a member of the household.

In 1920 Silas was still living on rented property. He now had a dairy farm.

On Dec. 29,1026, Silas passed away. Family and friends attended his funeral service at Goble's Funeral Home
before gathering at the Tulare Cemetery for the interbment service and to bid him farewell.

PIONEER TULARE RANCHER CALLED

Silas R. Gulley, 72, a resident of Tulare, for the past 32 years passed away Wednesday morning at the family home on South F Street. Deceased was a native of Virginia, and came here from that state in 1894. He resided on a farm for a number of years later movng in to the city.

He is survived by 6 children, Alvis and Fred Gulley of Tulare. Mrs H.S. Mann. Mrs. W. A. Neal and Mrs J.M. Setliff all of Bakersfield. and Mrs. I. C. Mires of Texas; also a brother B. Gulley in Tulare and a brother and sister living in Virginia.

The remains have been taken to Goble Parlors pending compleation of fureral arrangement.
