John arrived in America on April 25, 1865 at New York and gave his occupation as a "miner". He traveled to Canada and lived there 10 years. He married Mary Caldwell in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario on Feb 25, 1874. They had 10 children, the first two born in Ontario.

They moved to Sherman Township (Colo), Story, IA by 1878 and moved to Marshalltown, IA by 1881. After Kittie was born in 1885 they moved to Knox City, Missouri and in 1895 they moved to Joliet, Illinois, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He was a pioneer in Will county, a citizen recognized through his earnestness and sincerity.
