John Thomas was a son of Francis and Margaret Hoskinson DULIN of Loudoun County, VA, where it is believed John Thomas was born before the family's move to Western Virginia.

Francis Dulin is head of household on the 1840 Loudoun Co. Census with 1 male under 5 yo, 1 male aged 15-20, 1 male aged 30-40, 1 female aged 30-40, 1 female slave aged 10-24. These match the known family members listed on the 1850 Wood Co., VA Census.

John Thomas married Susan Jane Pilcher, daughter of Stephen C. and Cansada Butcher PILCHER in Wood County on 18 Nov 1851. They bore a total of 13 children, 3 of whom died in infancy or youth.

John and his brothers Everett S., Thaddeus P., and George A. DULIN purchased land from Hiram Pribble in November 1853, part of a 425-acre tract formerly known as Hartshorn Land, lot 22. The site, located near North Fork Hughes River and Flint Run in Wirt and Ritchie Counties, is the location of "Dulin's Graveyard". Public records verify or support belief that Francis Dulin and a number of other family members are interred in the graveyard, many with only fieldstone markers or no marking. Much of the research which revealed this family burial ground is the work of Marjorie Mayes. Mr. Bert Foutty aided in discovery of the graveyard, also.
