Mariah was enumerated either as a child or after she married Robert Major in the following U.S. censuses:
1850 and 1860 Censuses in Butler County, OH - St. Clair twp; 1870 Census in Madison County, AL - township no. 3, range no. 1 west; 1880 Census in Cass County, IA - City of Atlantic.
Mariah's obituary from the Atlantic [Iowa] Daily Telegraph, January 18, 1883, page 3, contains the following information:
Mrs. Major, wife of Robert Major, one of our best known business men, died last evening at 9 o'clock. She had long been in feeble health, and death finally came to her relief. The deceased was a daughter of Jacob Neimeyer, and was born in Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, December 31st, 1841. She was married to Mr. Major, May 21, 1869, in Cincinnati. Mr. Major, while serving in the army as lieutenant in the 5th Ohio cavalry, took a liking for Huntsville, Alabama, and resided there until 1878, when he moved with his wife to Atlantic. Here he built a large and comfortable home, which is now the repose of the dead. The deceased became professor of religion at the early age of 14 years, and died in the hope of a blessed immortality. The fell disease was consumption. The funeral will be held at the family residence tomorrow, at 2:30 P. M. Rev. John Herron will preach the sermon.
