"Miss Sallie Neimeyer died at her home at the corner of Fourth and Locust streets yesterday afternoon after a protracted illness. The time of the funeral is not fixed on account of awaiting the arrival of her brothers."
Note: The year of Sallie's death inscribed on the monument (1898) is in conflict with the year of the notice of her death that was published in the newspaper (1899). The Month and day were the same however. Because of other discrepancies in some of the dates on some of the other family members headstones buried in this Neimeyer plot, leads me to believe that these stones were not erected immediately after the deaths.
Sarah (Sallie)'s death information is inscribed on the side of her father, Jacob's stone.
Many researchers have made the error in assuming that this Sarah (Sallie) was the spouse of Jacob. The cemetery survey by the WPA made this assumption and some biographies written and rewritten say erroneously that Jacob's wife Sarah accompanied the family to Iowa. NO primary records have been found to support this. The ONLY Sarah residing with Jacob after moving to Cass County, Iowa is his daughter, Sarah/Sallie. It is clear by the numerous newspaper articles mentioning Sallie that she was a "Miss" - she never married. The 1880 U.S. Census also clearly states her relationship as "sister" to the head of the household, Charles Neimeyer. Jacob is also living in that same household and is clearly shown as "father". Think about it, IF Jacob were truly married after the family moved to Cass County, Iowa, why wasn't a wife shown living with him in 1870 and 1880 census records in Cass County, Iowa? Only his daughter Sarah (Sallie) was living with him and had lived with her father in every census record beginning in the 1860 census when she was 1 year old!
Sarah (Sallie) is shown in the following census records:
1860 U.S. Census, Butler County, Ohio
1870 U.S. Census, Cass County, Iowa
1880 U.S. Census, Cass County, Iowa
1885 Iowa State Census, Cass County, Iowa
