Hyland Clifford Beebe was the last child born to Clinton Henry Beebe (1805-1878) and Caroline WARNER (1804-1894).

*We initially had his date of birth as 20 Jun 1847, but his death certificate indicated his birth as 1 July 1844.

His siblings were: Lucilia (1825- ), Charles (1827-1913), Eli Henry (1828-1908), Ephraim Carlos (1833-1912), Cornelia L. (1836-1929), Abryon 'Byron' (1839-1910), Francis M. (1840-1921) and Edwin Beebe (1842-1863).

Hyland appears on the following censuses with his parents and siblings:

1850 - Attica, Lapeer Co., Michigan
1860 - Birch Run, Saginaw Co., Michigan

Hyland married first Annie WISE (1851-1879) in about 1868. They appeared on the 1870 census in Birch Run, Saginaw Co., Michigan.

Hyland and Annie had two children: Earl E. (1869- ) and Florence M. (1876- ).

After Annie's death in 1879, Hyland married for a second time to Arminda 'Minnie' Brotherton (1854-1899) on 4 May 1880 in Tuscola County, Michigan. Hyland and Arminda had one child - a daughter named Clara M. (1899-1899). *The correct spelling of Arminda's maiden name came from her daughter Alice's marriage record.

Hyland and Arminda are found on the 1880 census living in Midland, Midland Co., Michigan. They are living with a family by the name of Smith (Calvin and Sarah Smith).

Arminda died from dropsy which is an illness new mother's sometimes developed after the birth of a child. Dropsy usually kills the mother within 10 days of the birth of the child, but Arminda lived for 14 days after the birth of Clara. Baby Clara only lived for 13 days - dying the day before her mother. Both Arminda and Clara were buried on February 28, 1899 in Montrose Cemetery in Montrose, Genesee Co., Michigan (per their death certificates).

*Arminda's death certificate lists her name as Minnie Broulhedon (sp??) - hard to read.

Hyland didn't wait too long to marry for the third time to Eliza Ann MOORE (1869- ). They married on 6 Jul 1899 in Montrose, Genesee Co., Michigan. They apparently did not have any children.

Hyland and Eliza are found on the following censuses:

1900 - Montrose Village, Genesee Co., Michigan
1910 - Taymouth, Saginaw Co., Michigan

Hyland died on 21 July 1914 in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan from wounds received after he was hit by an electric car which fractured his right leg and hip. He only lived for 10 hours after he was hit by the electric car.

In the last days of his life, Hyland and Eliza were "wanderers". Per an article in the newspaper on his death, Hyland and Eliza had just finished picking berries for a local farmer and were waiting at the Russel crossing for an interuban local (a streetcar?) to come. Hyland was sitting on the edge of a milk loading platform with his legs hanging over. A car came "thundering by" and struck Hyland's legs mangling them horribly. He was taken to a local hospital and at first it was thought Hyland would live, but he died within 10 hours of the injury and died at 7:00am the next morning.

The story goes on to say that after Hyland was taken to the hospital, his aged wife was first taken to the hospital with Hyland and then to the Genesee County infirmity south of Flint as she had no other place to stay and could not stay at the hospital. She was notified of Hyland's death and taken back to the hospital. We do not know what happened to Eliza after this.

BURIAL:

His death certificate indicates he was buried in 'City Cem' which I believe is the Old Flint Cemetery that was located in Flint on Lewis and Avon Streets. Unfortunately, that cemetery was decimated to make way for a highway (probably 475). Findagrave indicates that those buried in the Old Flint Cemetery were removed, but no idea of where the individuals were re-interred and no idea if that is where Hyland was buried and then possibly re-interred elsewhere.

However, many of those buried in the "Old" Flint Cemetery were re-interred to the "New" Flint Cemetery and more than likely, that is where Hyland was re-interred. Whether he ever had a headstone, we don't know.

Note that another website indicates that the Old Flint Cemetery was located at the corner o Lewis and Geneseret Streets in the City of Flint, Section 8 (per information furnished by Michigan State Library).

The site further indicates that the buried remains were removed and re-intered in AVONDALE CEMETERY, nearby in Section 8, City of Flint, by the City of Flint, to make room for re-alignment of the streets and allow the construction of a downtown motel (now known as, HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS FLINT-CAMPUS located 1150 Robert T Longway Boulevard, Flint, MI 48503). The site indicates the Old Flint City Cemetery was located on Lewis Street, now named Chavez Dr. This information was shared by an older gentleman who was almost 90 at the time of his sharing the information and had grown up in Flint and remembered the Old Flint Cemetery.

The website went on to include further information about the burials at the Old Flint Cemetery, stating that in the 1950's, the bodies from this cemetery were disinterred and SOME were moved to Avondale Cemetery. The are buried an a common section on the west side of the cemetery, the stones surrounding the graves in a "U" shape.
