*Charles is my great-great grandfather

Charles Beebe was born 21 Apr 1827 in Vermont and died on 24 Feb 1913 in Millington, Tuscola Co., Michigan. He was the son of Clinton Henry Beebe* (1805-1878) and Caroline WARNER (1799-1894). *Some people show Clinton's name as Henry Clinton Beebe but 'newly' found documents show he signed his name as Clinton Henry Beebe.

NOTE: Regarding Charles' date of birth - His death certificate indicates a birth date of 24 May 1824 as shared by his son, Fred[rick] - so not sure which date is correct. The 1900 census indicates date of birth as November 1824, and his marriage record to Mary shows DOB as 1837 & age 26. Charles married on 26 Nov 1863 which would have made him 36 vs 26 when he married. However, on his 1888 marriage record to his 2nd wife, Sarah, his age is listed as 57 years old which would give a birth year of 1831. It is not unusual to find varying dates/years/months for an individual's birth - especially those born in the 1700 and 1800's.

Charles' siblings were: Lucilia (1825- ), Eli Henry (1828-1908), Ephraim Carlos (1833-1912), Cornelia L. (1836-1929), Abryon 'Byron' (1839-1910), Francis M. (1840-1921), Edwin (1842-1863), and Hyland Clifford Beebe (1844-1914).

Charles enlisted in the Civil War on 4 April 1865 in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan which was the same date and place that he mustered into the Civil War. His Muster Roll cards indicate that he was in the 23rd Michigan Infantry Regiment (which we have copies of) and he appears on a website as being in Company C of the 23rd Regiment (see site https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/23rd_Regiment,_Michigan_Infantry) and is also found on www.seekingmichigan.org which states that he "Enlisted in Company C, Twenty-third Infantry, April 4, 1865, at Pontiac, for 1 year, age 28. Mustered April 4, 1865. Joined regiment at Salisbury, N.C., May 28, 1865. Transferred to company G, Twenty-eighth Infantry, June 15, 1865. Deserted at Goldsboro, N.C., Sept. 15, 1865." As for deserting, sometimes soldiers were reported to have deserted, when in fact, they had not.

In addition, we have a copy of a "M and D Roll of Men Transferred" for the period of June 28, 1865 which indicates that Charles enlisted on March 23, 1864 for a period of one year and mustered in on March 29, 1864. This transfer card is transferring him from the 23rd Regiment to the 28th Michigan Regiment (Infantry). One additional card lists him in the 23rd Regiment, but indicates at the bottom to "see 28th Regiment".

I have to wonder if rather than deserting, Charles got lost in the shuffle of being transferred from one company/regiment to another? From reading various records and stories, I know this happened.

Charles' brother, Edwin, was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War and is buried in the Gettysburg National Military Cemetery. His other brothers, Abryon, Ephraim Carlos and Francis, also served in the Civil War as did Charles, himself. I also wonder if his brothers Eli Henry and Hyland Clifford Beebe also served in the Civil War (we don't have their military records).

Charles appears on two census records for 1860 - one was the Michigan Census which indicates he was living in Forest Township, Genesee Co., Michigan and the other was the U.S. Federal census which shows him living with a Nathanial and Lucinda Crawford. We're not sure why he's living with them - at first I thought that Lucinda was his sister, Lucilia, but a tree on Ancestry indicates that the Lucinda on the census was Lucinda BROWN Crawford.

Charles married Mary E. McCOMB (1844-1887) on 26 Nov 1863 in Genesee County, Michigan. They had six children:

Ida Mary (1867- ), Frederick (1868-1916), Alma/Elma (1870-1879), Elmer (1875-1959), Norah (1877-1877) and Hattie Irena Beebe (1883-1959).

*I am descended from Frederick

Charles and his family appeared on the following census records:

1870 - Mayfield, Lapeer Co., Michigan
1880 - Forest Township, Genesee Co., Michigan
1890 - Genesee Co., Michigan (Veteran's Schedule)
1894 - Forest Township, Genesee Co., Michigan (CEnsus of State of Michigan 1894)
1900 - Otisville Village, Genesee Co., Michigan
1910 - Forest Township, Genesee Co., Michigan

Charles also appeared on an 1899 map which shows the land he owned in Forest Township, Genesee Co., Michigan.

After Mary's death in 1887, Charles remarried to Sarah A. Squires (1826-1914) on 28 Jun 1888 in Genesee Co., Michigan (from the Genesee Co. Marriage Index to 1934, Book V06, page 16, Record 0239).

Charles died at 2:00pm on February 24, 1913 from "general breakdown from age."

Charles' son, Frederick, is also buried in this cemetery (no headstone) - he is buried in the old, original section along the back fence - see his memorial page).

Charles is our great-great grandfather and Fred is our great grandfather.
