Edwin Beebe was born in April 1843* in Attica, Lapeer Co., Michigan and died in the Battle of Gettysburg on 3 Jul 1863 in Gettysburg, Adams Co., Pennsylvania. *We have Edwin as being born in 1842, but 1850 census indicates his birth as abt 1843 and 1860 census as abt 1844. Also, when he enlisted in 1861, his age was given as 18 so that would make a birth year of 1843 versus 1842.

Edwin was the son of Clinton Henry Beebe (1805-1878) and Caroline WARNER (1804-1894). Edwin's siblings included:

Lucilia (1825- ), Charles (1827-1913), Eli Henry (1828-1908), Ephraim Carlos (1833-1912), Cornelia L. (1836-1929), Abryon 'Byron' (1839-1910), Francis M. (1840-1921), and Hyland Clifford Beebe (1844-1914).

*From Toni - I am descended from Charles who was my 2nd great grandfather

Edwin appears on the following census records:

1850 - Attica, Lapeer Co., Michigan
1860 - Birch Run, Saginaw Co., Michigan

On 8 Aug 1861, at the age of 18 years old, Edwin enlisted as a Private in Company E, Seventh Infantry in Arbela Township, Tuscola Co., Michigan for three (3) years. On 22 Aug 1861 at Monroe, Michigan, Edwin mustered into service for the Civil War and left Monroe on 5 Sept 1861 to join the Army of the Potomac. The companies of the 7th Regiment were volunteers recruited from various locations in the state of Michigan - Edwin's company was known as the "Tuscola Volunteers" of Tuscola (see below for complete list).

Total enrollment at the formation of the 7th Michigan Infantry was 1,375. By the end of the war, 127 were killed in action, 56 died of wounds, 147 died of disease, 17 died in Confederate prisons, and 344 were discharged for disability (wounds and disease) [http://www.geni.com/projects/7th-Michigan-Infantry-USA-US-Civil-War]

Edwin was killed on 'Cemetery Ridge' on 3 Jul 1863 which was the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The battle was fought July 1 - July 3, 1863 in and around the town of Gettysburg and resulted in the largest causalities in the Civil War. I believe that there were 1,082 casualties from Edwin's company [killed, wounded, disease] (per Wikipedia).

As Bev's info below indicates, Edwin was initially buried on a ridge that ran from the Abraham Bryan farm to the farm of Peter Frey [this was basically the area called 'Cemetery Ridge']. He was later re-interred at the Gettysburg National Military Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He is buried in the Michigan Plot, Section A, Site 21.

NOTE: That there was both a Cemetery Ridge and a Cemetery Hill at the Battle of Gettysburg. Cemetery Hill was at the northernmost area where the Union line was located and Cemetery Ridge ran north and south on the west side of the Union line. According to the information, Edwin was on Cemetery Ridge which is where he was killed and initially buried.

There were many Beebe's who served during the Civil War including Edwin's brothers, Charles, Abryon 'Byron', Francis M. and Ephraim Carlos. I would bet that his brothers, Eli Henry and Hyland Clifford also served, but I do not have information on them.

7TH MICHIGAN INFANTRY REGIMENT
The 7th Michigan Infantry Regiment was made up of the following companies:

* "Union Guard" of Port Huron
* "Curtenius Guard" of Mason
* "Jonesville Light Guard" of Jonesville
* "Monroe Light Guard" of Monroe
* "Tuscola Volunteers" of Tuscola
* "Blair Guards" of Farmington
* "Lapeer Guards" of Lapeer
* one company from Pontiac
* "Prairieville Rangers" of Prairieville
* "Burr Oak Rangers" of Burr Oak

From Wikipedia regarding the day that Edwin died: "On the third day of battle, July 3, fighting resumed on Culp's Hill, and cavalry battles raged to the east and south, but the main event was a dramatic infantry assault by 12,500 Confederates against the center of the Union line on Cemetery Ridge, known as Pickett's Charge. The charge was repulsed by Union rifle and artillery fire, at great losses to the Confederate army. Lee led his army on a torturous retreat back to Virginia. Between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers from both armies were casualties in the three-day battle. That November, President Lincoln used the dedication ceremony for the Gettysburg National Cemetery to honor the fallen Union soldiers and redefine the purpose of the war in his historic Gettysburg Address."
