Daughter of Christian Ziegler and Mary Emily Hatch. Bertha was born in Monroe County, NY and lived there until c1880 when her family moved briefly to Kearney, NE then to Coopersville, Ottawa, MI and finally settled 1884 in Rose Lake Twp, Osceola County, Michigan. Bertha's middle name was likely either Emily (her mother), Evaline (her grandmother), or Emogene (her Aunt).

Bertha met her first husband Josephus Williams in Rose Lake area, where Joe had extended family, and they married 31 Jan 1900 in Rose Lake and moved to La Porte Co, Indiana to live with Joe's family. Josephus died in May 1901, leaving a son Josephus Jr who was only three months old.

Bertha remarried James E Hornsby in Dec 1906 in Rose Lake, Michigan, and had one daughter, Mary Hornsby The family moved to North Platte, NE about 1911, then to Kearney, NE in early 1920s.

Bertha returned to Three Oaks, MI for her daughter Mary to graduate high school then briefly to Osceola County, Michigan where she lived with her brother Will Ziegler in Leroy, and where she and Will cared for her Williams grandchildren during the depression after her son Josephus Jr died in 1931.

Bertha died in Berrien County, where she lived with her daughter Mary (Hornsby) Taylor in Three Oaks, near to her extended Williams in-laws.

Bertha was buried next to her son Josephus H Williams Jr. in a plot owned by her brother-in-law Rev Monroe Williams.
