In his earliest years, Joe lived at the home of his grandmother Esther Teeter Williams until about 1906, when his mother Bertha remarried and moved back to Osceola County, Michigan.
By 1917, Joe moved with his family to North Platte, Nebraska, and then in 1921 to Kearney where he settled. Joe married Goldie McDowell on 23 Nov 1923 in Julesburg, Colorado. Joe had worked for a well-known lumber company since just before his marriage. Joe and Goldie had four children.

Funeral Is Held At Three Oaks
"Three Oaks. Feb 16. - Funeral services for the late Joseph Williams, 29, were held here this afternoon at the Free Methodist church, Mrs. Bertha Salter, the pastor, officiating.
The body of the deceased , a former local man, arrived here Sunday afternoon from his home in Kearney, Neb.
Burial was in the family lot at Rolling Prairie, Ind.
Besides the widow and four children the deceased is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bertha Hornsby, of LeRoy, Mich., one half sister, Mary Hornsby of this place, and other local relatives."
