Elizabeth "Bettie" Courtney parents were John Riley Courtney 1835 – 1891 and Catherine Ann Klepper 1826 – 1920. Her siblings were: B; Lurana Courtney 1855; Nancy Courtney 1858; Sarah Courtney 1860; William J. Coatney 1861, he married Nannie A Courtney; Cornelius "Neal" McClainen Courtney 1864 – 1934, he married Addie Jane Harris; Susanett Coatney 1868; Peter "Pete" R. Courtney 1870 – 1955, he married Eliza Ella Mc Bride.

By the tine that Bettie was 4 years the family moved and her daddy was faming in rural Rogersville, where his estate was valued at $400.00. When she was 14 the 1870 census found them living in District 3, White Co, Tennessee, with the nearest P.O. was Cave. Her father was farming an estate that was now values at $300.00. Bettie was not going to school. By the 1980 census the family was living back in the rural Saint Clair area of Hawkins Co. and Bettie was still unmarried and 24 years old.

Some time between 1880 and 1910 Bettie married Hardy Lillie. No children have been found for this marriage. By 1920 Hardy had apparently died because Bettie was a widow living, in Bulls Gap, with her sister, "Lucy" and her husband Ervin Russell.
The 1940 census revealed that Bettie had completed the eighth grade of elementary school. She had now lived with her brother "Pete" since before 1935, on Courtney Road near Saint Clair, Tenn.

On Bettie Ann Lilly's death certificate, The informant was her brother, P.R.Courtney. Bettie's mailing address was Route #2 rural Whitesburg, Tennessee. She apparently died at home on April 27, 1943. Cause of death was myocardial (heart) Failure. Her body was taken to A, J. Steward and Son Funurel home to be prepared for Burial on April 28. 1943, in the Courtney Cemetery.
