Peter "Pete" R. Courtney parents were John Riley Courtney 1835 – 1891 and Catherine Ann Klepper 1826 – 1920. He was the last child of 8 born to the family. His siblings were: Lurana Courtney 1855 – 1907, she was married to Irvine Fain Russell; Elizabeth "Bettie" Courtney 1856; Nancy Courtney 1858; Sarah Courtney 1860; William Jesse Courtney 1861 – 1910, he married Nannie A Johnson; Cornelius "Neal" McClainen Courtney 1864 – 1934, Nannie A Johnson; Susanett Courtney 1868.

In 1880, when Pete was 9 years he had a friend that lived on a neighboring farm, Billy Spegil, the son of Eli and Malissa Spigel, to chum around with

On Oct. 10, 1899 Peter married Eliza Ella Mc Bride he daughter of Leroy Nelson McBride 1853 – 1920 and Lucy C Harris 1853 – 1911. They had six children: Edna Courtney 1901; Willie Courtney 1902 – 1902; Delphia Ruth Courtney 1904 – 1989; Gladys Tennessee "Tennie" Courtney 1907 – 1986, she married Herbert Lafayette Atkins; Basha Claria Courtney 1909; Fannie Queen Courtney 1912.

The census records revealed that after Pete ad Ella were married they were living in a house he grew up in. His father had died and his mother continued to live with him, and he was farming his father's land. By the Jan 8, 1920 census his mother, Kate Courtney, was still alive and 91 years old. She died the next month, Feb. 23, 1920. By the 1930 census Pete's widowed, 73 year old sister, Bettie, had joined the household.

The 1940 census revealed that Peter "Pete" R. Courtney had completed the eighth grade of elementary school. He was 70 years old and working 40 hours a week, 52 weeks of the year. The road than ran in front of the farm that he had lived all of his life had now been named Courtney Road. He declared that he owned his house and farm and his property was valued at $3000.00. His three single daughters were still in the household. Delphia Courtusy was 35, Clarice Courtusy was 29 and teaching high school, Fannie Courtusy was 27 and teaching grade school. His elderly 83 year old, widowed sister Bettie Courtney Lilly was still in the household. On April 27, 1943 Bettie past away.

The day before Christmas 1952 Pete's dear and faithful wife, Ella, passed away. The day after Christmas, Pete, his family and friends gathered at the Courtney cemetery to bid farewell to their beloved wife, mother and friend.

Three years later on Oct. 7, 1955 Pete joined his dear wife in death . His death certificate revealed that he died from Heart Disease and had been suffering from the ailment for several years. His body was taken to Homer Steward funeral director in Bulls Gap to be prepared for burial. His family and friends would gather at the Courtney Cemetery to bid him farewell on Oct.9, 1955.
