Elmer was the son of William Christian Anderson and Margret Catherine Scherer Anderson. Elmer had four sisters; Bertha Marie, Agnes Caroline, Dorothy Marguerite, and Helen Clara, and two brothers; Harold Oscar and John Olaf. He married Grace Josephine Spieker on February 17, 1937 at George, Lyon County, Iowa. Grace was the daughter of Enno Fredrick Spieker and Elizabeth B. Veenker Spieker. Elmer and Grace were the parents of one daughter, Marjorie. They farmed for a number of years and after retirement Elmer and Grace became house parents at Souix Falls College.
