William was the son of Olaf John and Caroline C. (Knutson) Anderson. He married Margret Catherine Scherer on March 15, 1906 at Yankton, South Dakota. They were the parents of four daughters and three sons. William passed away at the age of 41 years due to complications of appendicitis. He spent his entire life on the home farm were he was born. The home was built by his father, himself and his brothers. His funeral was from the home farm with Rev. Ole M. Odland officiating.
