Nora May "Norrie" Garvin Shay was born September 8, 1876 in Soldier, Carter County, Kentucky, USA.

Her parents were William Wallace Garvin, Sr. (1845-1910) and his first wife, Mahulda "Huldy" "Huldah" Mulvina Hiatt Garvin (1854 – 1884).

Norrie's mom passed away February 14, 1884, from complications of childbirth after having given birth to Norrie's brother William Thurston Garvin. William was born February 6, 1884. Precious angel William followed his dear mother in death scarcely one month later on March 9, 1884.

Four years later Norrie's dad married Annie Bell Garvin. Annie Bell raised Norrie and Norrie's siblings Lucy, Robert Harrison and Nellie as her own. Annie Bell was a kind and loving step-mother to Wallace and Huldy's children.

Wallace and Annie Bell had the following children of their own (half-siblings to Norrie):

Florence ("Flora," "Flo"); Grace Grahn, Mary Vie; Rebecca "Becky"; William Wallace, Jr. ("Wallace," "Bill"); and Franklin "Frank."

In 1895 Norrie married Amada Shay (1873 – 1920), son of Jessie C. Shay and Sarah Jane Shuff.

Norrie and Am had the following children:
Hettie "Het,"; Russell.; Harlow; and Raymond E.

Norrie's half-sister Mary Vie Garvin Ferguson (1894-1987) used to call Het and Russell the "onery little dickens."

The first settlers of Soldier were Harrison Garvin, father of Rebecca Patton [widow of the late J. D. Patton] and Jeremiah Powers Richards [father of the late John William Richards], and the Underwoods on Dry Branch Road, ancestors of Velva Underwood, Mrs. Ina Vincent, and W. A. Gilbert.
These Pioneers were substantial farmers and livestock dealers.
Still standing as a monument to the achievements of these early settlers is the old GARVIN homestead in which MRS. NORA SHAY granddaughter of HARRISON GARVIN now lives.
Only recently the old Richards homestead was razed by Jason Bradley who now owns the part of the farm on which the house stood. The ole Underwood home still stands and is now owned by Charles Pelfrey, Sr.
