Burns to Death in Fire Which Destroys Home

Walter Ellis Sheldon, 60, Living Alone at 78 Kellogg, Victim of Sunday Fire. May Have Smoked in Bed. This Habit Believed to Have Been Responsible; Body Burned Beyond Recognition.

Walter Ellis Sheldon, 60, living alone in a one-story shack at 78 Kellogg; was burned to death about 5 o'clock Sunday morning when his quarters caught fire, supposedly from his having smoked while in bed.

Body is Badly Burned. His body was burned beyond any possibility of recognition, the wall of chest being eaten away by the flames. When firemen from companies one and four succeeded in entering the structure, after subduing the flames with a line of hose, they found Sheldon's body on the floor. It appeared that he had gotten up from his cot but had fallen overcome by the smoke or flames before he could reach the door.

Victim Lived Alone. Sheldon lived next door to his wife, Mrs. Marie Sheldon, from whom he had been separated for five years. Police learned that the couple was on fairly good terms, however. As Sheldon was afflicted with cancer he had not been able to do any work for a long time. Mrs. Sheldon had helped him keep clothed and fed, it was learned. Coroner Carl S Gray Investigated and decided an inquest would not be necessary. The history of Sheldon's habits, he said, showed that he was a confirmed cigaret smoker, frequently smoking in bed. It was supposed therefore, that he woke up early and indulged in a cigarette Sunday morning, falling to sleep and forgetting to extinguish his cigaret which set fire to the bed clothes.
The fire department found the shack was all in flames on its arrival. Formerly a coal office it was valued at $100 while the contents of the place were worth less than $50.

The body was removed to Hebble's undertaking establishment where arrangements were made by the relatives to hold the funeral tomorrow morning at 10:30 from the chapel., conducted by the Rev. W.M.P. Jerrett with burial in Oak Ridge cemetery, Marshall.
