Hector was the second of eight children for parents James and Dessie (Shaffer) Austin. The family lived in Grafton and his father worked for the railroad.

Hector married Idella Godwin on April 15, 1933 in Grafton, West Virginia. They had two children, Ronald Lee and Betty Jean. Son Ronald died at birth.

The family lived in Grafton. In 1940 Hector was employed as a construction worker. He later went on to become a baker with the Grafton Baking Company, and worked for them for 28 years.

Wife Idella died in 1951 from severe injuries sustained during a horrific auto accident. Hector was driving the family car, with his wife and daughter inside. He pulled out onto the highway, hitting an approaching empty coal truck. The car was totaled, pinned against the side of a hill. His daughter sustained critical life threatening injuries, but Hector only had minor injuries.

A year after his wife died, Hector married again, to Lillian Lee. This marriage did not last long. On March 29, 1956 Hector married Sylvia Rowland in Grafton, West Virginia.

Hector Lee Austin Dies Tuesday At His Home

Hector Lee Austin, 57, of 301 School St., died Tuesday at 1:25 p.m. at his home. He had been ill six weeks.

He was born Jan. 23, 1912, in Grafton, a son of the late James William Austin and Mrs. Dessie May Shaffer Austin, who survives.

Also surviving is his widow, Sylvia Rowland Austin, whom he married March 29, 1956; one daughter, Miss Betty Jean Austin, at home; three brothers, Lawrence Austin, Maywood, Calif., Paul Austin, New Haven Mich., and Alfred Austin, Thornton; three sisters, Mrs. Martha Bracken, Huntington Park, Calif., Mrs Mary Armstrong, Rt. 5, Grafton, and Miss Alice May Austin, Weston.

One son, Ronald Austin and one sister; Rosie, are deceased.

Mr. Austin was a baker and was employed by the Grafton Baking Co. for 28 years. He attended the Assembly of God Church in Grafton. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
