Child's Chances for Recovery Considered Slim
Doesn't Know Her Mother Died In Auto Crash Near Webster Last Night
A child's life is in danger today as she lies critically injured in a Grafton hospital bed - not knowing that her mother was killed when their family automobile collided with a coal truck last night.
The 14-year-old girl is Betty Jean Austin. Her dead mother is Mrs. Idella Austin, 43, of 697 Walnut Street. They were the front seat occupants of a 1950 Buick sedan that collided with an empty coal truck at the intersection of the Trap Springs Road and U.S. 119, just this side of Webster, at 6:30 last evening.
Driving the automobile was their father and husband, Hector Lee Austin, 39. He received injuries of a less severe nature. The coal truck was driven by Roger DeBarr of Route 2, Grafton, or Pruntytown. He received only bruises. The owner of the truck is James N. Walker of Grafton.
State Trooper H.L. Duckworth, who investigated the accident with Sheriff Harry Baten, said the accident was unavoidable, as Mr. Austin, who was traveling toward Webster, drove onto the highway in front of the approaching truck. He said Mr. DeBarr apparently was a victim of circumstances.
Mrs. Austin lived only five minutes after she was admitted to Grafton City Hospital. She apparently died from a fractured skull and a deep gash across her forehead . The Austin child is recovering from a fractured left leg and ?. Her standing physician describes her condition as critical. Mr. Austin, also hospitalized, also sustained lacerations of the right leg, face and head, and a cerebral concussion.
Mr. Duckworth said no charges had been preferred against the driver of the truck. The 1950 sedan, driven by Austin, was completely demolished. It was rammed against the side of the hill, off the roadway.
Mrs. Austin was the former Anna Shafer Godwin. Her foster father, James Y. Godwin, lives at Webster, and her mother, Anna Shafer Godwin, died in 1948. In addition to her father, husband and daughter, she is survived by two brothers, Howard D. Godwin, Webster, and Hayward J. Godwin of the U.S. Army.

Coroner's Inquest Held In Fatal Mishap
An inquest is being conducted into the automobile accident death of Mrs. Idella Austin, 43, a passenger in her husband's car when it collided with a truck at the junction of Routes 250 and 119, just this side of Webster on Wednesday evening. The inquest was ordered by Prosecuting Attorney Richard B. Bord.
Coroner Ona C. Jeffreys and his six jurymen viewed the body at a local funeral home yesterday evening at 4:40 o'clock and adjourned to meet at such time as witnesses were able to attend and testify. The jurors are: R.M. Vandervort?, J.W. Robinson, Carson Kester, Bernard Hoffman, Gordon Ridenour and Grant Williams.
In the meantime, Mrs. Austin's daughter, Betty Jean, 14, remains in a critical condition at City hospital suffering from a fractured left leg and jaw, a fractured collar bone, cerebral concussion, and skull fracture. Mr. Austin, husband of the deceased woman, is also still hospitalized, but his condition is not considered critical.
Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Austin are undecided pending the recovery of Mr. Austin.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. this morning for Mrs. Idella Elizabeth Austin of 697 Walnut Street who was killed in an automobile accident on January 24. The Reverend C.V. Tate officiated at the service, and interment was made at Webster Cemetery.
Mrs. Austin was born in Barbour County on February 15, 1907, a daughter of James Y. Godwin, who survives, and the late Anna Shaffer Godwin. Other survivors include Hector L. Austin, husband, and Betty Austin, daughter.
Two brothers, Howard D. Godwin of Webster, and Hayward J. Austin, U.S. Army, Orlando, Florida, also survive. There are seven surviving sisters: Mrs. Flo Haddix, Grafton; Mrs. Hazel Cunningham, Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Nora Reneman and Mrs. Viola Peters, of Grafton; Mrs. Rosa Shingleton, New Waterford, Ohio; Mrs. Wenedith McCauley, Webster; Mrs. Lena Mossburg, Frederick, Md.
The deceased was a member of the United Brethren church. Mr. Austin is employed locally.
