Prof. Hiram Miller Showalter son of R.S. and Verdie Miller Showalter, of near Dale Enterprise, died Saturday morning in Bristol, Tenn., after twelve day's illness. The immediate cause of his death was pneumonia.

He was Professor of Biology in King College, Bristol, Tenn., at the time of his death. Prof. Showalter's body was brought to the home of his parents for funeral services to be held from Linville Creek Church of the Brethren near Broadway, today (Monday) at 11 o'clock. Mrs. Showalter and Dr. Showalter's sister, accompanied by Prof. Adams, a representative of the College, came here by auto Saturday, the body coming by train. His wife and sister were with him during his illness and death.

The services at Linville Creek Church will be in charge of Rev. L. S. Miller and Rev. John O. Myers.

Friends will meet at the home of Dr. Showalter's parents, near Dale Enterprise, at 10 a. m. to go to Linville Creek Church for the funeral and burial rites.

Honorary pallbearers will be Drs. I. P. Lewis, O. E. White and L D. Husted, of the University of Virginia; Profs. A. C. Adams and P. H. Wright, of King College, and Drs. Carl McConnell, G. W. Chappelear, and A. M. Showalter, of Madison College; and Robert Anthrum of Boyce, Va., and Rudolph Glick of Bridgewater.

Active pallbearers will be William Frank, Everett Bowman, Alvin Myers, Grant Showalter, Herbert Sanger and Warren Heatwole.

Dr. Showalter is survived by his wife, his parents, two brothers, Galen D. Showalter of Harrisonburg, and Joseph W. Showalter, of V. P. I. and four sisters, Mrs. Mattie Swigart, Parsons, Kan,; Miss Ruth Showalter, at home; Miss Frances V. Showalter, of Neffsville, Tenn., and Miss Merle Showalter, Instructor of Nurses at the Norfolk (Va.) General Hospital.

Prof. Showalter was regarded as one of Rockingham’s brilliant young sons engaged in educational work. His family here have long been prominent in Rockingham County activities.

He was born near Dale Enterprise March 22, 1903. In 1929 he married Miss Carrie Kline, a daughter of Samuel R. and Mrs. Florence Hays Kline of near Broadway.

A brilliant student, he is a BA of Bridgewater College 1928; a graduate with MA of the University of Virginia in 1929, and PH.D. graduate of the University in 1933.

While pursuing advanced study at the University of Virginia, he was elected to membership in the Society of Sigma XI (honorary scientific fraternity) He was honored also with a fellowship with the Blandy Experimental Farm of the University and after graduation taught at the University for two years. He taught, also at the Jacksonville State Teachers College at Jacksonville, Ala., and for the past four years has been professor of Biology at King College at Bristol.

Dr. Showalter was a member of the following scientific societies: American Association of the Advancement of Science, Botanical Society of America, Genetics Society of America, and the Tennessee Academy of Science (Secretary of the Botany section).

He was a frequent speaker in meetings of these societies and was invited this year to address an International Congress of Biologists at Edinburgh, Scotland, but unrest in Europe caused postponement of the meeting.
