Marie Julia Showalter, 103, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Bridgewater Retirement Community in Bridgewater, Va.

She was born Oct. 11, 1904, in Dale Enterprise, Va., and was the daughter of the late Reuben Swope and Verdie Miller Showalter.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mattie Showalter Swigart, Ruth E. Showalter, and Frances V. Showalter, and two brothers, Hiram Miller Showalter and Galen D. Showalter.

Marie graduated from Dayton High School in Dayton, Va., and Bridgewater College and briefly taught in Rockingham County Schools. In 1933, she received a master's degree in Nursing Education and Administration from Medical College of Virginia and pursued graduate studies at the University of Virginia and Columbia University.

She taught nursing at Norfolk General Hospital and for several years was a supervisor of nursing services in the state of West Virginia. In 1943, she volunteered for the U.S. Army Nursing Corps, was involved in the immediate setting up of field hospitals during the Normandy invasion and later was engaged in the Battle of the Bulge. She retired with the rank of Major. After the war, under Civil Services, she. was supervisor of nursing services at Biloxi, Miss., Bay Pines, Fla., Fayetteville, N.C., and Huntington, W.Va.

She retired in 1964 to Harrisonburg and enjoyed extensive travel on cruise trips and tours to many different continents except Antarctica.

Other interests were community service, tutoring, reading, needlework, and family history. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, American Nurses Association, and Retired Officers Association. She made reunion trips to World War II battlefields.

She entered Bridgewater Retirement Community in 1995. She was a member of the Dayton Church of the Brethren in Dayton,. Va. She was known as a friendly, outgoing person who welcomed opportunities to help people.

She is survived by a brother, Joseph W. Showalter of Port Republic, Md. and seven nephews and nieces, Mac David Showalter, Betty Showalter Redmond, Phyllis Ann Showalter, all of Harrisonburg, Va., Romelle Swigart Million, Alexandria, Va., William "Bill" Miller Showalter, Palm Harbor, Fla., Barbara Showalter Price, Kilmarnock, Va., and David Howell Showalter, Prince Frederick, Md.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Weavers Mennonite Church Cemetery in Harrisonburg with Pastor Marty Doss officiating. Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg is handling arrangements.
