Reuben Swope Showalter, 87, retired farmer and well-known resident of the Hinton community, died Thursday morning at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Showalter had enjoyed good health for a person of his advanced years until ten days ago when he was admitted to the hospital.

A son of David B. Showalter and Susan Swope Showalter, he was born March 20. 1873 at Dale Enterprise. Mr. Showalter was a lifelong member of the Cooks Creek Church of the Brethren and took an active part in the affairs of church as long as his health permitted. He served as a deacon for 35 years.

On Dec. 25, 1900 he was united in marriage to the former Miss Verdie Miller who survives along with four daughters, Mrs. Mattie Swigert, Manassas; Miss Marie. J. Showalter, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Miss Ruth Showalter Port Republic, Md.; three sons, Galen Showalter, Hinton; Francis Showalter, Philadelphia; Joseph Showalter, Port Republic, Md. One sister, Miss Florence Showalter, Hinton and one brother, J. T. Showalter, Hinton and seven grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Showalter was preceded in death by a son, Hiram who died in 1939.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock from Weavers Mennonite Church with the Rev. Olen B: Landes and Rev. W. F. Flory officiating, Interment will be in Weavers Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Richard Miller, Paul Craun, Walter Showalter, Stuart Miller, Lowell Texiere and Earl W. Showalter.

The body now rests at the McMullen Funeral Home where it will remain until Saturday afternoon at 12:30 when it will be placed in the church.

Relatives will meet at Mr. Showalter’s late residence at Hinton Saturday at 1:30 for a brief service.

Pallbearers and friends meet at the church at 1:45.
