Berenice Kathryn McCarty, age 98, of Albia, Iowa died Saturday, November 3, 2007 at the Monroe Care Center in Albia. Berenice was born July 25, 1909, near Melrose, Iowa to William and Teresa (Fitzgerald) Scieszinski.

Berenice was a graduate of Melrose High School and attended Iowa State Teachers and Penn College. She taught in rural schools in Appanoose and Monroe Counties. Berenice married James F. McCarty June 20, 1936 in Melrose, Iowa. They shared forty-one years of marriage and raised three children before James died on June 27, 1967.

Berenice was active throughout her life. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and St. Patrick's Altar and Rosary Society both of Georgetown.

Berenice is survived by two sons, James F. McCarty and wife Janet of Ankeny, and Lawrence W. McCarty and wife Cathy of Albia; 13 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 3 step great grandchildren. Berenice is also survived by two sisters, Helen Scieszinski of Melrose, Grace Roush of Clive; one brother, Maurice Scieszinski of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews.

Berenice was preceded in death by her parents, William and Teresa; her husband, James F. McCarty; one son, Donald J. McCarty; three sisters, Mary Scieszinski, Regina Roach, and Teresa Scieszinski; and three brothers, Francis Scieszinski, Mike Scieszinski, and William Scieszinski.
