Maryknoll, NY. SISTER ROSE ANNA TOBIN died peacefully at the Maryknoll Sisters Residential Care Center on March 2. She was 89 years of age and had been a Maryknoll Sister for 71 years.

ROSEMARY ANN TOBIN was born on July 30, 1920, to ROSE ELIZABETH SCHMIDT TOBIN and JOSEPH GEORGE TOBIN in Grand Rapids, MI. She was one of 10 children. Two of her sisters became Sisters of Mercy, SR. LORRAINE TOBIN, RSM, and SR. EILEEN TOBIN, RSM, while three of her brothers became Redemptorist priests, REV. Gerard [GERALD] J. TOBIN, CSSR, REV. FRANCIS J. TOBIN, CSSR, and REV. BERNARD TOBIN, CSSR. Sister Rose Anna's parents, three sisters and all five brothers have predeceased her.

Rosemary graduated from Cathedral [Catholic] Central High School in Grand Rapids in 1938. The same year, she entered Maryknoll from St. Alphonsus Parish in Grand Rapids, MI. She received the religious name, Sister Rose Anna, which she kept all her life.

Sister Rose Anna made her First Vows on June 30, 1941, and her Final Vows on the same date in 1944, both at Maryknoll's home near Ossining, NY. She studied at Mt. St. Vincent College in New York City, graduating with an A.B. in Political Science in 1944. That same year, Sister Rose Anna was assigned to Central America, where she spent her entire foreign mission life, working in Nicaragua, Guatemala and Panama.

Sister Rose Anna later engaged in further studies she needed for her mission work. In 1965, she studied linguistics and English as a second language at St. Michaels College in Winooski, VT, and at the University of Vermont. She took correspondence courses from the University of Iowa during 1979-80 for a Certificate in the Exceptional Child and Mental Retardation program. She also studied psychology, audio-visual technology, and applied sociology at the University of Panama from 1968-1978.

Sister Rose Anna served 16 years in Nicaragua, where she established a mission center with a clinic and school in Siuna. Besides teaching in the elementary school, she spent four months each year doing pastoral ministry in outlying missions. During this time, she learned both Spanish and Miskito, an Indian language. In 1955, she became the superior and principal of the school, overseeing the development of a rapidly growing program that benefited marginated families in central Nicaragua.

In 1959, Sister Rose Anna was assigned to Huehuetenango, Guatemala, where she worked on two initiatives: educating boys and founding a provincial house to meet the living needs of Maryknoll Sisters there. As area coordinator for the Maryknoll Sisters, she helped build a school and a Center House. In 1966, Sister Rose Anna transferred to Guatemala City, where she became supervisor of the pre-primary and primary school programs at Colegio Monte Maria and was in charge of the boarding school.

In 1967, she was asked by Mother Mary Colman to help out in our mission projects in Panama for one year. Sister Rose Anna stayed for 11 years. Working in the primary section of Colegio San Vicente in Ancon, she supervised CCD teachers in eight parishes of Old Panama and at two military bases. In 1970, she became the principal of both the primary and secondary schools at Colegio San Vicente. She also was involved in social welfare programs at Paolo Seco Leprosarium.

From 1974 to 1988, Sister Rose Anna served as a board member of the Maryknoll Sisters' Central American Region, responsible for finances. During these years, she was also asked to be the treasurer of the archdiocesan schools. Involved in the Federation of Catholic Schools of Panama, she was also an evaluator for the Catholic education team. She served on the board of directors for the Federation of Religious of Panama from 1983-1988.

In 1988, Sister Rose Anna returned to our mission center near Ossining, NY, to provide services necessary to the Congregation. She also was the coordinator of our Regina Maris convent at Watch Hill, RI, which was used for the Sisters' retreats and vacations. In 1991, she became our housekeeping supervisor until 2004. The next year, Sister Rose Anna officially retired, but she remained an active member of our center community.

In 2009, serious illness forced Sister Rose Anna to move to our Residential Care Community, where she lived until her death. She was known not only for her skill in organizing, planning and finances, but also for her adaptability, generosity and gentleness.

Sister Rose Anna is survived by her sister, MRS. BETTY SKAZINSKI of Grand Rapids, MI, her nieces, and other relatives. A Vespers service was held at the Maryknoll Sisters Center on March 9. The following day, a Mass of Christian Burial was held in our main chapel.

Burial was at the Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery. Dorsey Funeral Home of Ossining, NY, is handling the funeral arrangements.
