∼Barkley Rites
Are Monday
Funeral services for George F. Barkley, 81, brother of the late Alben W. Barkley who died Friday afternoon at Lourdes Hospital, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Harris Funeral Chapel.
The Rev. James P. Irion will officiate.
Mr. Barkley, who lived at 223 Harahan Blvd., moved to Paducah from Louisville only a month ago.
A railroad man all his adult life, Mr. Barkley was a retired conductor of the Illinois Central Railroad.
Death was unexpected. He became ill early last week and was moved to the hospital on Wednesday, but his illness wasn't at first considered critical.
Born, like his famous brother, at the little crossroads community of Wheel in Graves County, he was the son of John W. and Electa Barkley.
He moved to Paducah as a teen-age boy and went to work for the railroad as a flagman. He rose by degrees to the position of conductor and held it for many years until his retirement.
He was the second member of the "Veep's" immediate family to die within a week. His widow, Mrs. Jane Barkley, died in her sleep Saturday, Sept. 5, in Washington.
Mr. Barkley is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maude Barkley of Paducah; a son, George F. Barkley Jr. of Bowling Green; a daughter, Mrs. Josephine B. Long of Paducah; a brother, John Barkley of Paducah, and two sisters, Mrs. Ima B. Brown and Mrs. Bernice Thieleman, both of Paducah.
Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tyler White, David Barkley, Oscar B. Denker, Robert Denker, Richard Barkley and John Kirksey.
Friends may call at the funeral home.
