Mrs. Electa Barkley, Mother
Of Senator Barkley, Dies

Mrs. Electa Barkley, 89-year-old mother of Senator Alben W. Barkley, died Saturday night at 10:15 o'clock at Riverside Hospital.

She was stricken a week ago with influenza and pneumonia followed.

She was the widow of John W. Barkley, who died in 1932.

Funeral services were not arranged last night, but rites probably will be held at Margaret Hank Memorial Cumberland Presbyterian church.

Senator Barkley was unable to get to Paducah before his mother's death. He reportedly is on his way here today.

Mrs. Barkley was born at Carruthersville, Mo. She came to Kentucky at an early age and grew up at Bowling Green.
After her marriage she came to this vicinity, living at Clinton, Lowes, Paducah and on the Lovelaceville road about a mile from Lone Oak.

Mrs. Barkley was an active member of the Margaret Hank Memorial church. Her loyalty to church work did not falter as she grew old and "Mother" Barkley could always be counted on to take a leading role in any program undertaken by her church.

Her famous senator son was born while the Barkleys lived near Lowes.

Besides Senator Barkley she is survived by two other sons, John, with whom she lived, and George Barkley, and two daughters, Mrs. W. H. Thielman and Mrs. Oscar Denker, Paducah.

Last September, when President Truman stopped at the Paducah Airport to pick up Senator Barkley, Mrs. Barkley was taken to the airfield to meet the President. Earlier she had attended a dedication service at the Margaret Hank church, where Senator Barkley was principal speaker.

Senator Barkley was unable to get to Paducah before his mother's death. He telephoned Roy Prather, of Paducah, early Sunday that he was leaving Washington by plane and asked Mr. Prather to meet him at the municipal airport.

When Senator Barkley arrived at Washington National Airport, President Truman's personal plane, the "Sacred Cow," was waiting. Senator Barkley was the only passenger besides the plane's five-man crew.

The plane came in for a smooth landing at the Paducah-McCracken Municipal Airport at 12:15 p.m., three hours and 15 minutes after leaving Washington. This was the plane's fourth trip here.

Senator Barkley was met by Mr. Prather and Roy Woodall, president of the Greater Paducah Association, and taken to the funeral home.
