"His doctor said he apparently was stricken with a heart attack. However, an autopsy will be conducted today to determine the exact cause of death. Gray had been convalescing from an abdominal operation. He was doing very well, according to his doctor, and was scheduled to go back to work next month.
"Witnesses said Gray was raking leaves in his front yard when he suddenly put his hand on his chest and fell to the ground. He was rushed to the hospital by the Chico Ambulance Service.
"Gray, a life-long resident of this community, was born in Dayton in 1900, the son of John and Margaret Gray, early pioneers in this area. Following the second world war, in which he served, he did carpentry work here. He belonged to the First Christian Church and also was a member of the Disabled American Veteran of Chico.
"His marriage to Alice Atchison Gray took place in 1951 and other survivors include two brothers, E. C. (Dick) Gray and Al Gray, both of Chico; a sister, Mrs. Edna Hamilton of Centralia, Wash.; and the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. Opal Betty, Mrs. Laura Hovey, Mrs. Alta Wookey, and John and Harry Anderson, all of Chico. Funeral arrangements are pending at Brusie Funeral Home."
