Chico Daily Enterprise, Monday, June 3, 1912: "Mrs. J.W. Gray Passes Away. Mrs. John W. Gray died suddenly Saturday night at her home in the Cohasset road at the age of 51 years. A coroner's jury called by Coroner Wallace and Deputy Richardson found that death resulted from hemorrhages of the lungs. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Christian church of Dayton, the Rev. Lobdell officiating. Mrs. Gray was apparently in good health Saturday night and she visited Chico Saturday. She was stricken shortly after 10 o'clock that night. She was born August 3, 1861, and was a native of Illinois. She had lived in California 31 years. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Charles Anderson, an unmarried daughter, six sons, two brothers, Philip Penick of Chico, Price Penick of Oregon and a sister, Mrs. Dibble of Oregon."

Per the Death Certificate on file with the State of California: Margaret Ann Gray, daughter of Jeremiah Pennick and Clarissa Jane Ball died June 1, 1912. She was born August 3, 1861 in Illinois and was 50 years 9 months and 28 days of age. Burial was at Dayton cemetery on June 4, 1912, with J.W. Gray informant.

From Other Sources: Pallbearers serving at the funeral for Margaret Ann (Penick) Gray were from W.O.W., [Women of Woodcraft] on June 4, 1912 at the Dayton cemetery. She was aged 50 yrs., 9 months, and 28 days at the time of her death.

Chico Record, Tuesday Morning, June 4, 1912, pg 4 col 6: Mrs. John Gray Died As Result of Apoplexy. Coroner John Wallace held an inquest at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon over the body of Mrs. John W. Gray, who died suddenly the night before, as told in The Record. The verdict of the coroner’s jury was that Mrs. Gray met her death as the result of pulmonary apoplexy.

Of the deceased’s surviving relatives, a brother and six children reside in this city.

The funeral will take place at the Dayton church at 2 o’clock this afternoon, and burial will be in Dayton cemetery.

Gray yesterday afternoon was largely attended by relatives and friends of the deceased. The funeral procession started from the family home three miles out on the Richardson Springs road at noon. Rev. G.L. Lobdell of the Christian church officiated at the Dayton church at 2 o’clock and interment was made in Dayton cemetery.
