Luther was born in a log house, built in 1814 by his mother's maternal uncles. He was the second son of Geo. Wm. Boyd and Eliza Vail Markee. His given name was George. Luther but he adopted the name "Martin Luther" because of his appreciation and admiration of Martin Luther. He graduated from Scio, Ohio, College (1890 and 1896) and was a school teacher and later, superintendent of schools in Kinsman, Ohio. He went on to be a very successful lawyer in Columbus, Ohio. Luther married in 1893 to Emma Fisher of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and was the father of Justin, Robert, and Dorothy (Haskins). He was the "family photographer" and thankfully so - his are the only photos of the Boyd family from the early 20th century.
