Richard Beers, born March 27, 1844, came to Nebraska from Rockford, Illinois in 1871 and took up farming, purchasing the NW1/4 Section 10 in Osage precinct. In the winter of 1876, he returned to Rockford and on January 30 was married to Rhoda Marsh. They resided on the farm in Osage precinct until 1908 when they purchased a home in Syracuse and retired from farming. Richard was a precinct assessor and also the first school teacher in his home district #58 and was a member of the school board practically all of his residency there. The school became known as the Beers school because sons Clarence & Frank also taught in the school and daughter Ella (Halvorsen) substituted there. Five generations of Beers children attended the school before it closed in 1979. Richard and Rhoda Beers were the parents of 8 children, one of whom died in infancy.
