Samuel C. Branch, son of Rev. Sam'l S. Branch and Elizabeth (Smith) Branch, came to Wayne County Illinois with his parents and siblings in 1852 when he was 17 years old. In 1852 he married Lamyh Ann SCOTT, daughter of Maj. Thos. Samuel and Lamyh had three children: Hosmer, William Lincoln, and Lamyh. Hosmer died age 4, and Lamyh only lived 3 months.

Samuel and his twin Stephen Smith Branch enlisted in the 62nd Illinois Infantry in April 1862. Samuel's wife died 10 days after childbirth with the baby Lamyh, who died 3 months later.

After the war, Samuel married 2nd Mahala Caroline STRIBLING, daughter of the Methodist circuit preacher Bradford Stribling. Samuel and Caroline had four children, three of whom died young. Samuel, who was a carpenter, died age 39 survived by his wife Caroline and two sons, Will and Alpha.
