Marilla Branch, youngest of eleven children, was 17 when her father, Rev. Sam'l S. Branch died in Lamard Township, Wayne Co, Illinois, in 1862. She married Wm Dudrey, who was living in the same Twp at that time. William served in the 5th Cav with Marilla's brother Levi Branch 1862-65. Although I have never found a marriage cert, (the Wayne co courthouse burned in 1886) I think they married in 1865 because she is not living with her widowed mother and the rest of the family in 1865 census.

Wm never remarried. He put the three living children out with other families and he died in the Old Soldier's Home in Leavenworth, Kansas. Leota, born 1870, was raised by foster parents Mr and Mrs J.T.Godfrey and later married Wm Orr. Leslie Dudrey born 1873, was raised by the Alfred Boomers of Great Bend KS. Lou Dudrey born 1876 may have been adopted by a Shaw family, and she married Bert Witherspoon.
