Rev. Sam'l S Branch had 11 children by three wives, the first two wives dying in childbirth in Meigs Co, Ohio. He moved his family and congregation to Wayne County in 1852 and started the Oak Valley Free Will Baptist Church. We are very grateful to whoever repaired his tombstone. His middle name is probably Stedman - maternal surname-but we have no confirmation of that so far.

1884: HISTORY OF WAYNE CO: (Free-Will Baptists by Bestow & Blackburn, pg 121-122 (with corrections)-- The first church organized in this county about two miles west of Jeffersonville, Sept 2 1854, by Rev. S. S. Branch, and consisted of six members: S.S. Branch, Elizabeth Branch, Densy TUBBS, Samuel BRANCH, Jacob S. HAWK AND Mary HAWK.

Of this number the last three are still living and active members of the church. S.S.Branch was chosen pastor; J.S.Hawk clerk, and Samuel Branch, deacon [NOTE: this Samuel Branch is a cousin to SS Branch, his wife is Phoebe and they had no children. He is buried in the Geff cemetery].

The Saturday before the third Sabbath of each month, was appointed for covenant meetings. Regular services were held on the Sabbath.

Rev. S.S. Branch was born in Vermont [book says: in 1794, other records say 27 Dec 1801], removed to Ohio in [1802]; professed religion April 1831; baptized by Rev. Eli STEADMAN [his brother-in-law]. Sam'l S. was ordained 1841, removed to Illinois 1853; and died 29 Jan 1862, leaving a wife and eight children.

At last accounts his widow Elizabeth (Smith) Branch was living in Big Stone Co Minn with their son Joseph. Of the ten children of this family, four are living. The oldest, Sirenus (SIC)...(in northern Wayne Co, a carpenter)...The second child of the family (Hannah) is the second wife of Titus BUFFINGTON of Xenia ...well known... Stephen living at Sandoval, Ill; Joseph ...Rock County Minn (Big Stone Co); Levi...in Kansas.

Of the other original members, Densy TUBBS is living another life in the "bright beyond;" J. S. Hawk is living on a good farm enjoying the rounds of life; Samuel Branch [my note: the cousin] is living in Jeffersonville, Wayne Co in a ripe old age.......The membership at present (January 1884) is 92.
