In Memoriam - Mrs. Susannah E. Bowen died Monday, August 8, 1904, age 69 years. She was a daughter of Peter Strickland, late of this County. She was born in Bulloch August 30, 1834 and married John Hunter Bowen December 13, 1849. Seven of her eight children survive her.

SUSANNAH ELIZABETH STRICKLAND (Born 30 AUG 1834, Died 08 AUG 1904) married JOHN HUNTER BOWEN (Born 17 OCT 1817, Died 02 OCT 1871). The wedding ceremony was conducted on 13 DEC 1849 by her father, Peter Henry Strickland, Her mother was Rebecca McElveen, (Born 1807, Died 18 MAR 1856). Susannah, called "Susan" by all who knew her, was 15 years of age and her husband was 32 years of age when they married.

THERE WERE EIGHT (8) CHILDREN FROM THIS MARRIAGE AND SEVEN (7) SURVIVED TO ADULTHOOD. THEIR CHILDREN ARE LISTED BELOW, IN BIRTH ORDER:

1st Child - Macey Ann Catherine Bowen, b. 30 Oct 1850, d. 15 Apr 1935, married Pharis Elkins Phillips (1855-1913). Both are interred at Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Bulloch County, Georgia where all her sisters are, except Deborah who died in infancy.

2nd Child - Elisha Jackson Bowen, b. 10 Aug 1852, d. d. 19 May 1930. His Death Certificate, dated June 1, 1930, states he is interred in Bulloch County, however, as of this writing his grave has not been found, and it his descendants are considering placing a Stone Memorial next to his Mother in Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The search is still on for his burial site and will continue until his descendants "call for" and "place" a permanent Stone Memorial honoring his life and presence here on Earth.

3rd Child - Rebecca Ann Bowen, b. 01 Apr 1855, d. 12 Nov 1937, maried John Malcolm Warnock (1851-1941) and both are interred at Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Bulloch County, Georgia where all her sisters are, except Deborah, who died in infancy.

4th Child - Alfred Jackson Bowen (Sr.), b. 31 May 1858, d. 06 Dec 1929, interred in Ephesus Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, on US Highway 301, Bulloch County, Georgia. He married Ann Elizabeth "Annie Eliza" Williams (1867-1931), daughter of Aaron Cone Williams (1847-1902) & Mary Jane DeLoach (1852-1946). Thirteen children from this marriage, twelve survived to maturity.

5th Child - Margaret Elizabeth Bowen, b. 1860, d. 1934, married (1) Henry Grady Foston (1863-Unknown) and (2) Peter Cone Richardson (1839-1918), a prominent farmer and CSA Veteran from Bulloch County, Georgia. She had one son with each husband, William Jefferson Foston, b. 09 Nov 1895, d. 02 Oct 1978), and Morgan Floyd Richardson, b. 04 May 1904, d. 16 May 1990). She is interred at Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Bulloch County, Georgia where all her sisters are, except Deborah, who died in infancy.
                    
6th Child - Silas Everett Bowen, b. 09 Feb 1862, d. 20 Sep 1931, His Death Certificate, dated December 30, 1931 by Registrar, Mrs. D. C. Jones, states his place of internment as Trinity Cemetery on 21 Sep 2014. This cemetery and his grave has not been found as of this writing on October 28, 2014. The search is still on for his burial site.

7th Child - Deborah Bowen, b. 29 Jun 1865, d. Aug 1865, interred adjacent to her father, John Hunter Bowen. Deborah's grave is located in the same plot containing the graves of her grandparents and her uncle Robert Bowen, born 1804, died circa 1805 in Bowen-Dekle Family Cemetery, Candler County,Georgia.

8th Child. William Peter Bowen, born Dec 1869, in Bulloch County, Georgia, d. CA 1918, in Bulloch County. Burial location is currently unknown, still searching. He married Winnie Anna Hagan (b. Feb 1873, d. After 1920, still searching actual death date). They had at least eight (8) known children together, and several more currently being vetted. These eight (8) children are listed below, in birth order:

a. America Bowen, b. 30 MAY 1888, d. 21 NOV 1962, married Hartridge L. DeLoach, (1884-1970), both interred side by side in LOWER LOTTS CREEK CHURCH CEMETERY, BULLOCH COUNTY, GEORGIA. This is not the correct America Bowen and the search is still on for the correct America Bowen.

b. Gertrude, b. Feb 1889, d. Unknown. Still searching for traces of her life, and location of burial.

c. William Johnnie Bowen, b. 04 JAN 1891, in Bulloch County, GA, d. 23 MAY 1968 in Candler County, GA. He is interred in LOWER LOTTS CREEK CHURCH CEMETERY, Bulloch County, Georgia.

e. Annie Ophelia Bowen, b. Aug 1895. Searching for burial location. Married Pharies E. Bowen (1891-1930), son of Elisha Jackson Bowen (1852-1930). They had several children, one of whom is Julian Foster Bowen, b. 07 DEC 1913, d. 03 SEP 1987 (see Findagrave.com Record # 80708291). Still searching for more children.

f. Ulysses Grant Bowen, b. 21 JUL 1905, d. 19 SEP 1939, (age 34 year, 1 month, 29 days), in Bulloch County, Georgia. Married Lurine Williams (b. 05 NOV 1912 - in Candler County, Georgia, d. 23 JAN 1977- in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia), daughter of Ben Franklin Williams and Cora C. Williams. Both are interred in LOWER LOTTS CREEK CHURCH CEMETERY, Bulloch County, Georgia. Before the death of Ulysses Grant Bowen, he and his wife, Lurine Williams, had at least four (4) children, as follows, in birth order:
(1) Winnie Lee Bowen, born 20 FEB 1931, died. 22 MAY 2001.
(2) Annie P. Bowen, born Ca. 1933,
(3) Mary E. Bowen, born Ca. 1936,

g. Troy Lee Bowen, b. 14 AUG 1912, in Bulloch County, Georgia, d. 27 JUN 1978, in Marion County Florida. He Married Ola Carrie Zeigler, b. 25 DEC 1905 in Georgia, d. 27 OCT 1991, in Ocala, Marion County, Florida. This was his 1st, and only marriage, and was his wife's 2nd marriage. Both are interred in SIMMONS BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY, Citra, Marion County, Florida.

h. Charles Gordon Bowen, b. 13 JAN 1914, d. 13 MAR 1969 (age 55 years, 2 months), interred in BONAVENTURE CEMETERY, SAVANNAH, CHATHAM COUNTY, GEORGIA (LOT #92) He married Pearl Geneva Counce (1925 - 2005), daughter of Clarence H. Counce & Ola Carrie Zeigler. They divorced and she is interred in SIMMONS BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY, Citra, Marion County, Florida under the name PEARL G. WIMBERLY. His wife was called "Grace" by her contemporaries.

2. Great grandparents, JOHN CAMPBELL STRICKLAND (1749 - 1836) and APPA (maiden name not known) STRICKLAND (1750-1795). (John Campbell Strickland was born in old Edgecombe County, English Province of North Carolina - this part, in later years, became Halifax County, North Carolina. John Campbell Strickland died at his home between Mushmelon and Watermelon Creeks, Tattnall County, Georgia) & his Indian wife, APPA (“APPIE”), A CROATAN TRIBE INDIAN, WAS BORN IN HAIFAX, North Carolina (DATE OF BIRTH & DEATH IS CURRENTLY UNKNOWN - still searching).

3. Grandparents, DAVID JONATHAN STRICKLAND (1785 -1896) & TREACY MARTIN (1789 - 1856)(NOTE: Treacy Martin’s mother was a LUMBEE Indian (her name is not known) and David Jonathan Strickland’s mother, “Appie”, was a CROATAN Indian.

4. Parents, PETER HENRY STRICKLAND (1806 - 1875) & REBECCA MCELVEEN (1807 - 18 MAR 1856). He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War (During this period he age was 55 at the outbreak of hostilities to 59 when fighting ceased). He was a Private in Company B, 1st Georgia Reserves, Bulloch County, Georgia Militia.  He served as a prison guard at the infamous Andersonville Prison, Sumter County, Georgia.
