JOHN HUNTER BOWEN, b. 17 Oct 1817, d. 02 Oct 1871, lived to the age of 53 years, 11 months, and 15 days and is interred in BOWEN-DEKLE CEMETERY, Excelsior Community, Candler County, Georgia. He is a CSA Veteran, serving as a Private, Company D, 1st Regiment, Georgia Reserves (Symons), Confederate States Army. His wife, Susannah ‘Susan’ Elizabeth Strickland, b. 30 Oct 1834, d. 08 Aug 1904) is interred in Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Bulloch County, Georgia. The story passed down is, she told her three daughters, "Please see that you don't bury me 'way out there in those woods' with your father where no one will come visit my grave." The three daughters, Macey Ann Catherine, Rebecca Ann, and Margaret Elizabeth, kept her wishes and also all three are also interred in the same cemetery (MIDDLEGROUND PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY). John Hunter Bowen married Susannah Elizabeth Strickland on December 13, 1849. At the date of their marriage, he was 32 years of age and she was 15 years of age. During the twenty-one years they were together, prior to his death, they had eight (8) children together and all survived to adulthood, except one ,Deborah Bowen, b. 29 Jun 1865, d. Aug 1865, who died in infancy, and is interred in the Bowen-Dekle Family Cemetery, near her father's headstone.
CEMETERY LOCATION. This cemetery is located near Excelsior Community, Candler County, Georgia (about a mile from the small rural community of Excelsior, 700+ yards off a County Road named "Remer Lane". This 24-ft. wide access road runs for 700+ yards from Remer Lane to the small Cemetery. This access road is owned by the Descendants of Elisha Bowen & Penelope Everett and the Trustees of the small Bowen-Dekle Family Cemetery see after the Cemetery. In this Cemetery is where John Hunter Bowen's infant daughter, Deborah Bowen, is interred near his gravesite's Headstone inside the cemetery plot with her grandparents, and Robert Bowen (brother of John Hunter Bowen).

His Death Certificate, dated June 1, 1930, states he is interred in Bulloch County, however, as of this writing his grave has not been found, and evidently his descendants are considering placing a Stone Memorial next to his Mother in MIDDLEGROUND PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY for a find a grave,com memorial record for him has been established listing his name there. The search is still on for his burial site and will continue until his direct descendants "call for" and "place" a permanent Stone Memorial honoring his life and presence here on Earth.
3rd Child - Rebecca Ann Bowen, b. 01 Apr 1855, d. 12 Nov 1937, maried John Malcolm Warnock (1851-1941) and both are interred at MIDDLEGROUND PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY, Bulloch County, Georgia where all her sisters are, except Deborah, who died in infancy.
4th Child - Alfred Jackson Bowen (Sr.), b. 31 May 1858, d. 06 Dec 1929, interred in EPHESUS PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY, on US Highway 301, Bulloch County, Georgia. He married Ann Elizabeth "Annie Eliza" Williams (1867-1931), daughter of Aaron Cone Williams (1847-1902) & Mary Jane DeLoach (1852-1946). Thirteen children from this marriage, twelve survived to maturity.
5th Child - Margaret Elizabeth Bowen, b. 1860, d. 1934, married (1) Henry Grady Foston (1863-Unknown) and (2) Peter Cone Richardson (1839-1918), a prominent farmer and CSA Veteran from Bulloch County, Georgia. She had one son with each husband, William Jefferson Foston, b. 09 Nov 1895, d. 02 Oct 1978), and Morgan Floyd Richardson, b. 04 May 1904, d. 16 May 1990). She is interred at MIDDLEGROUND PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY, Bulloch County, Georgia where all her sisters are, except Deborah, who died in infancy.
6th Child - Silas Everett Bowen, b. 09 Feb 1862, d. 20 Sep 1931, His Death Certificate, dated December 30, 1931 by Registrar, Mrs. D. C. Jones, states his place of internment as Trinity Cemetery on 21 Sep 2014. This cemetery and his grave has not been found as of this writing on October 28, 2014. 7th Child - Deborah Bowen, b. 29 Jun 1865, d. Aug 1865, interred adjacent to her father, John Hunter Bowen. JOHN HUNTER BOWEN, b. 17 Oct 1817, d. 02 Oct 1871, lived to the age of 53 years, 11 months, and 15 days and is interred in BOWEN-DEKLE CEMETERY, Excelsior Community, Candler County, Georgia. He is a CSA Veteran, serving as a Private, Company D, 1st Regiment, Georgia Reserves (Symons), Confederate States Army. His wife, Susannah ‘Susan’ Elizabeth Strickland, b. 30 Oct 1834, d. 08 Aug 1904) is interred in Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Bulloch County, Georgia. The story passed down is, she told her three daughters, "Please see that you don't bury me 'way out there in those woods' with your father where no one will come visit my grave." The three daughters, Macey Ann Catherine, Rebecca Ann, and Margaret Elizabeth, kept her wishes and also all three are also interred in the same cemetery (MIDDLEGROUND PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY). John Hunter Bowen married Susannah Elizabeth Strickland on December 13, 1849. At the date of their marriage, he was 32 years of age and she was 15 years of age. During the twenty-one years they were together, prior to his death, they had eight (8) children together and all survived to adulthood, except one ,Deborah Bowen, b. 29 Jun 1865, d. Aug 1865, who died in infancy, and is interred in the Bowen-Dekle Family Cemetery, near her father's headstone.
CEMETERY LOCATION. This cemetery is located near Excelsior Community, Candler County, Georgia (about a mile from the small rural community of Excelsior, 700+ yards off a County Road named "Remer Lane". This 24-ft. wide access road runs for 700+ yards from Remer Lane to the small Cemetery. This access road is owned by the Descendants of Elisha Bowen & Penelope Everett and the Trustees of the small Bowen-Dekle Family Cemetery see after the Cemetery. In this Cemetery is where John Hunter Bowen's infant daughter, Deborah Bowen, is interred near his gravesite's Headstone inside the cemetery plot with her grandparents, and Robert Bowen (brother of John Hunter Bowen).

4th Child - Alfred Jackson Bowen (Sr.), b. 31 May 1858, d. 06 Dec 1929, interred in EPHESUS PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY, on US Highway 301, Bulloch County, Georgia. He married Ann Elizabeth "Annie Eliza" Williams (1867-1931), daughter of Aaron Cone Williams (1847-1902) & Mary Jane DeLoach (1852-1946).
