William Cox was the son of Benjamin Cox and his first wife, Eleanor Ferguson Cox. He married Rebecca Mills in 1872 and they had seven children, five of whom were born in Ireland. After auctioning most of their belongings, the family, including William, his wife, children, and half sister, came to America from County Longford, Ireland. They lived for a while on the east coast before settling in Graceville, Minnesota. He died in Graceville on June 27, 1913.
