Robert Cox, with his parents and siblings, came to America from County Longford, Ireland. They lived for a while on the east coast before settling in Graceville, Minnesota. In 1900 he graduated from the Northern Institute of Osteopathy in Minneapolis and later attended Hamline University College of Physicians and Surgeons, which later became part of the University of Minnesota. He held MD, DO, and CM degrees. He began practicing medicine in Hillsboro, ND and St. Cloud, MN. In 1905 he moved to Edmore, ND to establish a medical practice, and was a physician in that area until a few months before his death in 1944. He married Ella Sophie Johnson on September 2, 1914, and they had two children, William and Rebecca. Robert was survived by Ella who was remarried to William Shirk in 1957. The couple resided in Chandler, AZ, but returned to Edmore, ND for a vacation in 1959. In early October, Ella entered the Edmore Community Hospital. She died on November 30, 1959, and is buried at the Zion Cemetery in Hoople, (Walsh County) ND.
