William was the mayor of Graceville for two terms. He served on the public school board, was a member of the Graceville Fire Department for 55 years, and was secretary of that department for 50 years. Since 1933 he was the official weatherman for the Graceville Enterprise newspaper.
He was employed by John McRae and Sons Lumber Company. The business was sold to the Standard Lumber Company in 1924 and William was the manager of that company until 1933. At that time, he and his brother, John, established Cox Brothers Fuel, a coal business in Graceville. Following John's death in 1952, William continued actively operating the business until he suffered a stroke on January 1, 1963. He was admitted to Holy Trinity Hospital in Graceville and died there two and a half months later at age 85.
