John Mauk Lingenfelter, Sheriff of Finney County, Kansas, Died Thursday Night
John Mauk Lingenfelter, 77, for fifteen years sheriff of Sumner County and a prominently known resident of Wellington, died Thursday night at 10 o'clock at St. Luke's Hospital following an Illness of several weeks.
Mr. Lingenfelter was born in Perry Township, Jefferson County, Pa. A son of John U. and Catherine Lingenfelter. He was reared to young manhood there and lived in Punxsutawney for a number of years, coming to Wellington in 1877 . He spent most of his life as a peace officer, having served two years as sheriff of Finney County and fifteen years as sheriff of Sumner County. He also served as an officer at the Kansas penitentiary at Lansing, Kansas.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Elks Club. Mrs Lingenfelter preceded her husband in death on May 31, 1932. For the past few months he has made his home with his daughter Mrs Blanche Hackney, of Coffeyville.
Surviving are two sons. Harry of Glendale, Calif., and Will of Yermo, California; one daughter, Mrs. Hackney, one sister, Jane Brown, Los Angeles, Calif.; four nieces, Mrs. Harry Downs, Wellington; Mrs. Roy Chapman, Edmond, Okla.; Mrs. Burnell Estill, Edmond, Okla. and Mrs. Fred Meyer, Wichita, two brothers, Gurn and Hillis Lingenfelter, and one sister Mrs. Wesley Gahagan, all of Oliver Township Jefferson County, Pa., also survive.
Funeral services will be held from the Frank Funeral Home Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Pall bearers will be members of the Knight Templar Lodge.
Burial will be made in Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
