Jeremiah Vail, Sr. was the son of John Michael Vail (born 1792 SC, twin of Jeremiah; sons of William Walton & Elizabeth Vale) and Rachel Funderburk; grandson of Jacob Funderburk, Sr. and Barbara DeLaney; and great-grandson of Hans Devauld Funderburk and Catherine Laney. He married 1. Mary Bradley on April 3, 1840 in Palmetto, Pickens Co., Ala. She was the daughter John Bradley and 1. or 2. Annie, an Indian woman. Their children were John Michael, Henry, Abraham B., Mary Ann Rachel Elizabeth (Blalock), Sarah Jane, Frances Marien, *Jeremiah Jr. (md. Eugenia Coleman), Julia Artemisia (Blalock), Benjamin Franklin, Arrena Dulcena (Strickland), Mary Amanda (Alexander), Eliza Susan (Thomas), Martha Minerva (McMillian) and Jonas Pressley Vail. After Mary's death, Jeremiah married 2. Virginia Adalaide (last name unknown), a widow with children. Jeremiah and his 14th child, Jonas, were stemming and twisting tobacco, when he leaned back in his chair and died instantly of a heart attack. Twins Jeremiah and John Michael Vail had a brother, Hiram Vail.
