He was the son of William Walton Vail and Elizabeth (last name unknown). Children: Jeremiah b. May 12, 1817 (md Mary Bradley), Henry Vail, Jonas H. Vail, Jacob Hiram Vail and Mary A. Vail. John Michael's twin brother, Jeremiah Vail, married Rachel's sister, Mary Funderburk.
