Johanna (Joan) was the daughter of Harry (off.: Hielke) and Anna (Boxum) Voetberg, who came in 1896 to the USA, and was born in Topeka, Kansas on October 27, 1916. From Kansas her family moved to South Dakota where she grew up. In 1933 the Voetberg family moved to the Rock Valley area, Sioux County, located im the extreme northwestern part of Iowa.

From South Dakota she went to Michigan where she met and married on March 31, 1939 in Grand Rapids the one year younger Jacob (Jake) Hengeveld, who was born in November 1907 in the Netherlands.

In May 1940 Johanna (23, Kansas), her husband Jacob Hengeveld (32, machine hand at a brass factory) and their son Dennis Allen (six months, Michigan) were living in a rented house at Godfrey Avenue in Galewood-Burlingame villages, nowadays part of Grand Rapids, Wyoming Township, Kent County, located in the western part of Michigan. He lived in 1935 at the same place, but in another house. His wife Johanna lived then in Rock Valley, Sioux County, located in the northwestern part of Iowa.

They lived primarily in the Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan area.

In May 1969 her husband Jake Hengeveld died at the age of 61 years in western Michigan, quite likely in Grand Rapids

On August 2, 1971 Johanna remarried in Grandville, Michigan John Feenstra. Following their marriage they moved to Lynden, located in the extreme northwestern part of Washington, 5 miles south of the Canadian border.

On Tuesday, April 12, 2005 Joan Feenstra died at the of 88 years at an adult care home in Lynden.

Mrs. Feenstra was a member of the Third Christian Reformed Church and was well known for her oil paintings and beadwork lampshades.

Joan was preceded by her husband John in 1996 and is survived by son Jim Hengeveld of Seattle and Bonnie and husband Mike Brunett of East Jordan, MI.; step-children Marilyn Bos of Coloma, MI., Alvina and husband Rich Korthuis and Wendell and wife Lois Feenstra of Lynden; thirteen grand and nine great-grandchildren; a sister Helen Scholten of Rock Valley, Iowa and numerous other relatives.

Visitation hours will be from 1 to 9 pm on Thursday, April 14, at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden.

Graveside services were conducted on Friday, April 15, at 1:15 pm in Monumenta Cemetery followed by funeral services at 2:00 pm in the Third Christian Reformed Church in Lynden with Pastor Dick Vriesman officiating.
