ALLEN - Rea Edwin Allen was born in Chariton, Iowa, July 29, 1897, the son of William E. Allen and Anna Taylor Allen, and passed away at his home in Lucas, Sunday, July 3, 1966.
Edwin joined the Lucas Presbyterian Church at an early age and maintained an active membership throughout his life.
He was educated in the Lucas public schools, graduating from high school in 1916. Later, he attended "Four C" commercial college in Des Moines.
Edwin was married in 1920 to Vera Cunningham, who passed away in 1924 along with an infant son. A son, Dwight was born in 1921.
In 1924 he started work in his father's general store in Woodburn.
On June 13, 1927, he was married to Mary Palfreyman, a high school classmate. Soon after their marriage they moved to a farm near Derby. It was here that their four children were born: twins, Edwin and Elwin, a daughter, Shirley and a son, Roger.
In 1940, they moved to the family farm at the north edge of Lucas, where the remainder of his active years were spent. In 1949, his son Edwin started working with him on the farm.
The last five years Ed and Mary have lived in semi-retirement in Lucas.
Edwin had served as a trustee of his church, and was active in farm organizations throughout his farming career. He was a member of the state board of directors of the Iowa Farm Bureau for eight years. He was a member of the Lucas school board for many years, and was a member of the Lucas town council this year.
Edwin Allen will be missed by a wide circle of neighbors and friends as well as by a close family circle.
Some of the traits for which he will be remembered are his honesty, the way in which he stood behind his decisions, his willingness to serve for the benefit of the community and friends in need, and his loyalty and love for his family.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, a daughter, Shirley of New Boston, Ill., sons, Dwight of Montpelier, VT., Elwin of Chariton, Edwin of Lucas and Roger of Montezuma; also a son-in-law, Harold Mills and daughters-in-law, Lillian, Merry Ann and Frances; and by 12 grandchildren.
Two sisters also survive, Mrs. Aileen Penick of Chariton and Mrs. Bruce Towne of Jamaica. His parents, a sister, Ardis Rogers, and a brother, Earl preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 6, 1966 at the Beardsley-Fielding Funeral Home. The Rev. Dale Powell officiated. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
