EDWIN WILLIAM ALLEN

Edwin William Allen, son of R. Edwin and Mary Palfreyman Allen, was born October 31, 1928 on their farm southeast of Derby, Iowa and passed away October 28, 2010 at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa.

In 1940, his family moved to the family farm in the northwest corner of Lucas county. He attended Derby and Lucas schools, graduating from Lucas High School in 1947. Following graduation, he worked for Stone Cordage Company in Chariton before returning to the farm.

On September 30, 1949, he was united in marriage to Frances Joy Perry. For the next 56 years they farmed , while raising their children, Dan, Sue and Joyce. They moved to their Chariton "townhouse" in 1996. They have made their home at Northridge Assisted Living in Chariton since September 2010.

Edwin was an active member of his community, serving as Elder and Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church in Lucas, member of the Lucas Independent School Board, Lucas City Council, Chariton Farmer's Co-op Board, Lucas County Fair Board, Lucas County Farm Bureau Board, Lucas County Museum Board and volunteer at the John L. Lewis Mining and Labor Museum in Lucas.

He was awarded the Farm Bureau Family Century Farm in 1993, Lucas County Cattleman's Hall of Fame in 1999 and Lucas County Farm Bureau Farmer Hall of Fame in 2004.

Working on the farm was always a joy for Edwin. He especially enjoyed getting together with his neighbors as they worked each other's cattle in the spring and fall and helped each other during calving, planting and harvesting.

Edwin always held the door wide open at the farm house, to all family and friends, any day, anytime. Everyone was always invited to eat a meal and spend the night. Christmas at the farm, with all the family together, was a special time for him. His greatest joy was having family near.

Left to honor his memory are Frances, his wife of 61 years; son Dan and wife Becky of Lucas, daughter Sue Frazier and husband Scott of Chariton, daughter Joyce Crissman and husband Verne of Wickenburg, Ariz; granddaughters Emily Allen of Slater, Katie Cooper and husband Doug of Mondamin, Lindsay Crissman of Wickenburg, Ariz.; grandsons Jared and Kohl Crissman of Wickenburg, Ariz; great-grandson Kent Cooper; great-granddaughters Ellen, Brooke and Danielle Cooper; brother Dwight Allen of Burlington, Vt.; sister Shirley Mills and husband Harold of New Boston, Ill. and Brother Roger Allen and wife Nancy of Montezuma.
