Liberty- Thomas Hutson, son of Allen and Roxanna Hutson, was born in Montgomery County, Virginia Jan. 1, 1828 and died at his home near Ballstown, Ripley County, Indiana Jan. 1, 1900. He came to Ripley County with his parents when about 6 years old. January 1, 1854 he married Miss Ruth Thackery. They had 9 children, two of whom preceeded him in death. Seven survive with his widow, two sisters, one brother and twenty four grandchildren. He served in the Union Army from November 3, 1862 until honorably discharged June 3, 1865, in Co. K, 83rd Reg., Indiana Volunteers. Burial in Old Salem Cemetery in Delaware Twp.

Thomas Hutson served in the Union army - 83rd Regiment, Company K, Indiana Volunteer Infantry - and particpated in "Sherman's March to the Sea" This campaign left "scorched earth" across the state of Georgia [Special Field Order 120, 9 Nov 1864 - Gen. William T. Sherman, Military Division of the Mississippi]
Thomas afterwards named a son for General Sherman.
