George W. Hutson was one of the 15 children of Allen Hutson and Roxey Ballard. He came with his family to Ripley County in about 1834 from Montgomery County, VA where he was born.

George never married. His mother died when he was 28 and his father remarried that same year. From then until their deaths, George lived with his maiden sisters Amy and Martha Jane. Martha Jane and George are buried side-by-side in the Old Salem Cemetery with matching headstones.
