Martha Jane Hutson was one of the 15 children of Allen Hutson and Roxey Ballard. She was the first child born after her family moved to Ripley County in about 1834 from Montgomery County, VA.

Jane never married. Her mother died in 1860 and her father remarried that same year. From then until their deaths, Jane lived with her brother George and sister Amy in Ripley County. Jane and George are buried side-by-side with matching headstones.
