A wealthy and prominent member of Syracuse and a member of the state Assembly in 1856, he was assassinated by an intruder to his home. The sensational nature of the murder made the news in New York City. The murderer was never caught.

His father, Stephen Burton, was an early settler in the Town of Onondaga. Burr was a leading salt manufacturer with six salt blocks, and an alderman of the First Ward.

Funeral of Hon. Burr Burton -- The funeral of the late Burr Burton took place yesterday afternoon, and was very largely attended. The remains were interred in Oakwood Cemetery, in the family burying ground. No other developments have come to light in regard to the assassination, nor have there been any more arrests thus far.
