Mary Prudence Cottrell was the daughter of Solomon Gates Cottrell 1803 and Prudence Gardner.
Solomon Cottrell had moved from Brookfield, Madison County, New York to Newstead, Erie County, New York by 1835, where Mary Prudence was born, and to Alden, Erie County, New York by 1837.
When the family moved to Alden, they moved right next to the property of Bartholomew Barnes. Mary Prudence met and married Bartholomew's son Tracy Barnes, on November 1, 1851, in Newstead, which is the town north of Alden in Erie County, New York.
The couple lived in Alden, Erie County, and in Pembroke, Genesee County (the town just to the west of Alden). They had four children, Adelaide Mary 1853, Charles Edward 1856, Solomon C 1858, and Lida Omyra in 1861.
While working at the Wight or Wright Farm in Alden, Tracy met Truman Gillett, they became friends, and Truman boarded with the family.
In 1870 the family decided to move to Wisconsin. All of Prudence's family moved to Wisconsin, all her siblings and parents. Tracy and Prudence went by boat to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and from there by train to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Truman Gillett went with them and married their daughter Adelaide in 1871.
While living in the Oshkosh area, the family adopted one boy, Emile Richard Schroeder, whose mother had died in a house fire. Starting about 1875, after his wife Prudence had died, Solomon Gates Cottrell, the father of Prudence, lived with them.
In 1879, their son Solomon took a homestead in Milltown, Shawano County in Wisconsin. The family moved to this area, where they lived the rest of their lives. The town of Milltown was transferred to Langlade County and renamed Rolling about 1880. Solomon Cottrell, the father of Prudence, stayed in the Oshkosh area and lived with his daughter Clarissa.
Children
Tracy and Prudence's daughter Adelaide and her husband Truman Gillett moved with them to Langlade county and lived there the rest of their lives. They are buried in the same cemetery. They had six children.
Their son Charles married Josephine Ising in Oshkosh in 1879, they lived in Oshkosh and Weyauwega, Waupaca, Wisconsin, and later moved to Trinidad, Las Animas, Colorado by 1910. They had four children.
Their daughter Lida Omyra married Henry Cornelius Hansen in Oshkosh on December 19, 1881. They lived in Oshkosh. Henry died in 1902. By 1910 Lida and family moved to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Melette, South Dakota, and later moved to Fargo and Jamestown, North Dakota. They had nine children.
Their son Solomon lived them in Langlade county, and stayed close to the family.
Their adopted son Emil Richard Barnes, married Edna Bemis in Antigo, and moved to Oshkosh. Edna died in 1897, Emil married Margaret Ballard, lived in Oshkosh until about 1915, then moved to Milwaukee. Two children.
