Solomon Henry Cottrell was the son of Solomon Gates Cottrell 1803 and Mercy Palmer.

His parents married in Brookfield, Madison, New York. His father had moved to that area from Massachusetts about 1806 (son of John Cottrell who lived in Rhode Island). His mother's parents moved to the Brookfield area from Rhode Island.

Solomon's mother died in 1829 in Brookfield. His father married Prudence Gardner in Brookfield. Solomon had 2 natural siblings and six step siblings.

Solomon's father moved to Newstead and Alden New York in Erie County about 1835. Solomon grew up there, and eventually married Lydia Bundy about 1850. Lydia and Solomon had one child, Charlotte Lottie. Lydia died soon after the birth in 1856.

Starting about 1850 through 1875 all of Solomon's siblings and his parent moved to the Winnebago County area in Wisconsin. His sister Clarissa Brownell moved to Waukesha and then to Rushford, Winnebago County by 1860. Solomon also moved to Winnebago County. In 1856 he married Julia Ann Rodgers. His daughter Lottie is shown living with her relatives in 1860.

By 1860 Solomon and Julia had two children, Annie Fidekia 1857, and Ada Francis 1859.

In December 1863 Solomon enlisted for the Civil War, Company L, Wisconsin 3rd Cavalry Regiment. He was mustered out in October 1865. During the time Solomon was at war, his daughter Annie Fidekia died.

After the war, Solomon returned and lived in Waukau, until his death in 1871 (see Civil War Pension files).
