Emil or Emile Richard Schroeder Barnes was adopted by Tracy Barnes and Mary Prudence Cottrell. Emile was born into a Shraeder family that lived on the "The Island" on Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin, which was a high place in the "Cranberry Marshes". The mother had lost her life in an accidental fire. His natural father may have been August Schraeder. His adopted family lived in Oshkosh, Wisconsin until about 1879, when they moved to what is now Rolling, Langlade, Wisconsin where the family had taken a homestead.

Emil married Edna Bemis, the daughter of George Bemis, on September 5, 1895 in Antigo, Langlade Wisconsin. They lived in Oshkosh, Wisconsin until Edna died in May, 1897. After she died, Emil lived with his sister Lida Barnes Hansen in Oshkosh.

While in Oshkosh, Emil met and married Margaret Ballard, the daughter of Alfred Ballard, about 1902. The couple lived in Oshkosh, and there had two children, Leora 1903, and Loreene 1907.

The couple moved to south Milwaukee by 1915. They lived there the rest of their lives. Both Emil and Margaret, and their daughter Loreene (died in 1915 at age 8) are buried in this cemetery, with a single gravestone for their commemoration.

Their daughter Leora married Leo M Duwe, and continued to live in Milwaukee. They had three children.
